Depression
Bupropion, which is commonly known as Wellbutrin, is an antidepressant medication. It increases the flow of information between the brain and the body’s nervous system. The FDA has authorized treatment for depression with Wellbutrin. However, it is also offered as a smoking cessation aid, in combination with motivational support, to help smokers avoid the withdrawal symptoms during the first few days of quitting.
Even though Wellbutrin has high efficacy, it may not always function for all patients. If you consider discontinuing Wellbutrin because you are unsure if it is working, you should know what to expect. There are several signals that Wellbutrin is functioning or not. Read below an excellent overview of signs Wellbutrin is working or not for you.

What Is Wellbutrin SR?
Wellbutrin (Bupropion), formerly known as Amphebutamona, is one of the most regularly prescribed antidepressants globally. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of Wellbutrin to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and to help patients with smoking cessation. Also, Bupropion for anxiety has been shown to have effective outcomes. Wellbutrin became legally available to the American public in 1985, although it was initially synthesized in 1969 by an American laboratory. However, it only lasted a year before it was taken off the market due to a significant increase in the number of seizures linked with its use. Three years later, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) re-approved it for clinical usage, with a maximum daily Wellbutrin dosage of 450 mg.
How Does Wellbutrin Make You Feel?
Exactly how Wellbutrin works to treat depression is yet unknown. Researchers think it interferes with the uptake of two neurotransmitters: dopamine and norepinephrine (although the inhibition is weak). Bupropion does not affect serotonin reuptake and does not block monoamine oxidase, two important enzymes in the brain. As a result of its ability to boost dopamine levels at the neuron synapse by blocking dopamine reuptake, Bupropion effectively treats nicotine addiction. This alleviates the nicotine withdrawal-induced dopamine deficit. Wellbutrin use is also associated with some side effects such as weight loss, sleeping problems, dry mouth, and nausea. However, Wellbutrin’s side effects will often improve over the first week or two as you continue to take the medication.
Can You Feel Wellbutrin on the First Day?
The amount of time it takes for Wellbutrin to take effect depends on the underlying disease. After starting Wellbutrin for depression, you may notice an improvement in your sleep, energy, or appetite during the first 1-2 weeks of treatment. The recovery from a depressive mood or a lack of motivation, on the other hand, may take up to 8 weeks or more. Bupropion eases nicotine withdrawal symptoms, but it takes 1-2 weeks before you see any difference. After entering the body, it is broken down into three distinct metabolites, each of which has a separate effect on the body.

Wellbutrin For Depression
Wellbutrin considerably reduces the following depression symptoms after two weeks of treatment:
- Enhances the quality of one’s sleep
- Improves eating habits
- Unlike other drugs, the antidepressant Wellbutrin does not produce considerable weight gain in persons suffering from depression.
- Energy levels improve significantly after two weeks of using Wellbutrin.
It takes 6-8 weeks for Wellbutrin to positively affect depressed patients’ emotions and lack of enthusiasm in life. In most cases, major depressive disorder (MDD) and seasonal affective disorder(SAD) patients will begin to show recovery symptoms after around 6-7 weeks of pharmaceutical treatment. The period of treatment for mood disorders is generally long since the maintenance of mood and low zest for life must be consciously converted into the quality of life.

Wellbutrin For ADHD
After around two to three weeks on medication, people with ADHD may see the following changes in their symptoms:
- A happier mood
- A changed way of doing things.
- Positive thinking and a more positive frame of mind
- The ability to focus for a longer amount of time.
- Decreased agitation
Wellbutrin For Smoking Cessation
Wellbutrin use helps people quit smoking. Wellbutrin is primarily used to treat individuals addicted to smoking or trying to quit smoking. The therapy is typically short, as symptoms tend to improve after a few weeks of starting the medication. Taking Wellbutrin can help smokers overcome their addiction to cigarettes since it alters dopamine levels. It is a well-known smoking cessation drug. Wellbutrin negates the effects of nicotine by boosting dopamine levels in the brain.

Does Wellbutrin give you energy like Adderall? My doctor recommended that I switch to Wellbutrin but I don’t want to become apathetic… what if it works that way… Anyone knows how does Wellbutrin work exactly?
Veronica
I didn’t feel any improvement in about a week. and I wondered how long does it take for wellbutrin to work. during the 2nd week my energy level rose. wellbutrin gives you energy. but you may need to wait a bit.
How long does it take wellbutrin to work? I see none of the effects mentioned in the article. I am thinking of increasing Wellbutrin dosage from 150 to 300. Did someone try? Will it work then? TIA for answers
I had horrible wellbutrin side effects first week… had to ask for other meds…
Marisabelle:
I genuinely don’t recommend you increase wellbutrin dosage by yourself. consult with your prescriber. and also ask about the signs wellbutrin is working, maybe you just don’t notice it.
